SEMI
ACOUSTICS
Detailed specs and info about all models can be found here
The Idea
We came to the realisation some time ago that there was a space somewhere between an electric tapper and a fully acoustic tapper that needed to be filled … where the sound and feel of an acoustic nylon string instrument could be combined with the simplified construction and more compact form of an electric instrument. This is where our semi acoustic models fit in.
Together with Diego Serra we have endeavoured to bridge that gap, incorporating design elements from both our existing electric and acoustic models to give you an alternative, elegant (and more economic!) option for acoustic tapping. Their form is also designed to be bit more versatile overall and can be played comfortably seated, standing, vertically or horizontally.
As with our acoustic models, the adjustable carbon fibre endpin/spike can also act as a rigid internal structure facilitating use with a custom stand. We do not offer these stands for sale, but are happy to provide information and encourage anyone interested to contact a local metal fabricator or artisan.
The Construction
The bolt-on neck design facilitates independent construction of bodies and necks, so this model becomes a true collaboration between Diego and Mark. Diego is responsible for building the bodies, while Mark builds the necks and does the final assembly, setup and preparation for shipping.
The carved out bodies are fitted with acoustic tops that are similar in construction to those of a classical guitar. The level of acoustic sound is surprising loud for their smaller size, and their audible volume is similar to our acoustic models, being more than adequate for a pleasurable practise or recording rough ideas on the phone etc .. though perhaps the tone is not quite as round as our full acoustics. Their more rigid and solid overall construction make them heavier, yet still in the realm of what your average electric guitar weighs. They are equipped with the K&K Pure Classic pickup, in combo with the additional Ultra-Tonic anti-feedback sensors and circuitry, as standard issue.
Ordering
As with the acoustic models there is also a waiting list for these instruments, though In general the wait time is somewhat shorter. We ask for a $500 deposit to get on that waiting list that will retain your place in the queue. As with our acoustic models any tuning configuration is possible with notes (at fret 0) between B0 and D4.
To be able to offer an instrument like this at the best possible price point we have made a deliberate choice to reduce options in terms of woods. The bodies will be mahogany, the tops alerce, with spanish cedar necks and guayacán fretboards. There are however similar options to the acoustics in terms of tuning machines and inlay options.
If you haven’t already heard the pickup/mic comparison you should check out this YouTube video here. While the stock pickup combo is good for plugging straight into an amp, we’d certainly recommend considering the use of an additional external condenser mic or undersaddle transducer for a more balanced mix when recording.
